‘Excellent. Definitely a buy’ – The Telegraph on our 2024 Sauvignon Blanc
Posted by Gavin Quinney on 30th Apr 2025
"The new vintage of Quinney’s Château Bauduc Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Bordeaux, France (£13.25 in cases of six, delivery free in England and Wales for orders of 12 bottles, bauduc.com), has just landed. Crisp, streamlined, mostly sauvignon, excellent. Definitely a buy. People like it so much that Quinney is thinking of buying even more white vineyards. Though he says some think he is “stark, raving mad”.
Victoria Moore in the Telegraph, Saturday 19 April 2025.
When Victoria asked us for some bottles of our new Sauvignon Blanc we duly obliged, helped by the fact we'd just shipped a stash to our bonded warehouse outside London. We were thrilled that one of the bottles featured so prominently in her article in the Telegraph, and even happier with the endorsement of 'definitely a buy'. (We should send sample bottles to wine critics more often.)
In the follow up, Victoria wrote 'I opened the crémant and the sauvignon blanc tonight and both showing incredibly well, super-polished and on form. Really delicious. I've tasted a lot of crémants recently and they've all gone a bit the way of prosecco I'm afraid, never quite what you want, and as soon as I sipped yours I felt a deep sense of relief.'

'The great-value Bordeaux white wines to try'
Victoria Moore's article can also be seen online here, with the slightly different title as above. Here's the beginning of the piece, where Bauduc gets an honourable mention:
'They’ve got more wine than they can sell in Bordeaux: great stocks of it and vineyards that, in all but the meanest years (2024 was one of those), will only add to the over-supply. What to do about this? Part of Bordeaux’s solution to the imbalance is a government-funded vine-pull programme. But according to Gavin Quinney, an Englishman who lives and makes wine in the Entre-Deux-Mers region to the south-east of the city, there are two types of vines that, by and large, are surviving the cull.
“You’d be a numpty to rip up white because you can sell it for more than the price they pay for taking out the vines. People are actually doing OK at [selling] the whites.” Then there are the vines whose grapes are used for making sparkling wine, crémant, which is flying at the moment."
'Bordeaux is so strongly associated with red wine that many drinkers don’t ever think of it for still, dry whites, which accounted for 10.5 per cent of Bordeaux’s production last year. If you’re one of those, consider taking a look because these wines aren’t just well-priced but also a real pleasure.'
2024 Bordeaux - a year for dry whites
The world's fine wine merchants and writers came to Bordeaux to taste samples of the new vintage last month. While there was a mixed reception for the reds - though generally 'better than expected' - there was widespread enthusiasm for the dry white wines.
Here are a handful of comments I've seen on UK merchants' websites in their assessments of and introductions to 2024 Bordeaux:
'The dry whites are outstanding… There are excellent wines at all price points here… intense, deep and serious style of white wine' - Farr Vintners.
'There are some wonderful dry whites' - Berry Bros and Rudd.
'The dry white wines offer thrilling drinking: the cool vintage has delivered wines with great focus, intensity, and perfume, along with fine texture' - The Wine Society.
Château Bauduc Sauvignon Blanc 2024
£13.25 a bottle in cases of 6
‘An aromatic, zesty Sauvignon Blanc so good that we stuck our name on it. Made by our friend Gavin Quinney at his Château in the Entre-Deux-Mers, where I think they make some of the finest Sauvignon.’ Rick Stein in his wine list at The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Sept 2024.
We think this is the best Sauvignon Blanc we’ve made since the 2019 and 2020. It’s a delicious dry white that’s crisp, refreshing and moreish, with a mouth-filling texture. At Bauduc we had a lovely summer after a very wet spring, and 2024 is a fine vintage for our whites, though yields were lower this year meaning fewer bottles.
The back label: ‘This was our 25th vintage, as our first full season was in 2000. Our dry white from that year was chosen by Rick Stein as a ‘special selection’ so, as they celebrate 50 years at his famous Seafood Restaurant, our crisp Sauvignon Blanc has racked up 25 years there.’ 12.5% vol
Available with or without the Rick Stein signature label.
