Description

Magnums of this young yet delicious vintage of our special cuvée red, made with lower yields and aged in French oak barrels. Fuller bodied than our classic Bordeaux Supérieur red and it deservedly sells for a modest premium, we think. The 2020, an excellent year for Bordeaux and indeed for this wine, is drinkable now but it will age well for a good few years too.

The back label: "This special cuvée was made from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon from the same block and aged in small French oak barrels. A medium to full bodied red, it's ripe and supple enough to drink young or it will develop well in bottle over many years." 13.5% vol.

'Wow, this is a biggun’. It reflects the vintage perfectly. Powerful, purple, plush and plums - it’s got all the p’s ….. and I can still taste it now - 15+seconds while I’ve been working out how to spell ‘purple’. It’s a well structured, serious wine this, that balances juicy, ripe fruit and warm, spicy oak perfectly. 10/10 on the yum/bum TG tasting scale.'

'The aromatics here still show a few oak-related nuances, with fresh dark roast coffee grounds, along with fruit-driven aromas of dark liquorice and salted black olives. The palate feels supple and fresh, with a finely polished upper layer of blackberry and currants fruits, layered with toast and liquorice, with nicely managed tannins pervading the palate, finely grained and lightly peppery. This is a very smart 2020, so elegantly put together I wonder if I could drink this now, although common sense tells me to give it a little time to see those tannins soften a little. Drink or hold. The alcohol is 13.5%. 92/100'

Previous Vintages:

Château Bauduc Les Trois Hectares (Bordeaux Supérieur) 2019

A rather toasty nose to this 2019, grilled almond notes intertwined with dark chocolate and a little caramel, all dusted with notes of coffee grounds and a touch of garden mint. There is a delightful sense of integrated, seamless harmony to it on the palate, with a polished upper layer of savoury dark berry fruits, with complex nuances of olive, liquorice and black pepper. Toasty and dry, the tannins feel ripe but robust, and wrap the finish up quite comprehensively, and this is one I would have to tuck away for a few more years yet. A top result in what was a super vintage. Hold for now. The alcohol is 14%. 92/100

Château Bauduc Les Trois Hectares (Bordeaux Supérieur) 2018

A rather charming nose, with salty mineral, currant and black olive tapenade. This holds up well on the palate, showing a rather silky and well-integrated composition, with the dry blackberry and currant fruits draped over a firm but nicely covered blanket of tannins, the former yielding to the latter only in the finish. With more time the structure slowly dominates, as it does on the rather long finish, so it is clear this cuvée needs more time. Hold for now. The alcohol is 14%. 91/100

Château Bauduc Les Trois Hectares (Bordeaux Supérieur) 2017
An upmarket cuvée, this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon has a really charming, intense and focused character to the fruit on the nose, with crushed dark cherry stone and cherry skin, along with a focused, sinewy, sooty rather than plush suggestion which seems right for the vintage, all tinged with notes of hawthorn and acacia. A nicely vigorous palate, with lightly degraded fruit, with leathery elements, tense with moderate texture, with a textural substance in the middle which really entices. It has substance, energy, freshness and a firm finish. Give this a few years and it will drink well. From a 2021 Update. 91/100

Château Bauduc Les Trois Hectares (Bordeaux Supérieur) 2016
The blend is, as always, 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. A lovely evolution on the nose here, showing the benefit of keeping red Bordeaux back a few years, whatever the appellation and status. It offers smoked and toasted fruit, with nuances of liquorice, dried black olive and sweet leathery notes. A beautifully balanced palate, fresh and tense, sinewy in structure but with a really finely poised balance, savoury and full of energy. Really convincing, and giving plenty of pleasure now with a decant, although there is a ripe and tightly grained structure here which suggests there is five or ten years in this yet. Very well done. From a 2021 Update. 92/100
