Les Trois Hectares Blanc 2018 x 1
A lovely, dry white Sémillon from 70 year-old vines. An older vintage is listed at Rick Stein's Seafood restaurant and also great with all sorts of food, such as chicken, pork or vegetarian dishes. £12.50 per bottle.
The back label: ’Les Trois Hectares is a single, seven acre block of old Sémillon vines which were planted in 1947, along with some Sauvignon Blanc (about 20%) in the same field. Dry, aromatic and great with food - or simply on its own.' 12.5% vol.

Bordeaux 2018 will be remembered as an exceptional year in more ways than one. It may be a cliché but it really was 'a game of two halves': until the football World Cup in June, we'd had a wet winter and then a thoroughly soggy spring. Many châteaux struggled with the threat of mildew, and Daniel, Nelly and the team did a terrific job in the vineyard keeping any such nasties at bay.
And then the sun shone all the way to the autumn harvest - to have three complete months of sunny, dry weather from early July right through to early October is rare. After a small vintage in 2017 because of a late spring frost, we were lucky in 2018 to bring in an excellent crop for both the whites and the reds.

“Broad, just as Sémillon should be – textural and waxy – not very grassy, but there are a few bits of herb in there. Then quite a dense, viscous finish. This shares a lot of the qualities of young Hunter Valley Smillon – I wonder if it would develop those same toasty aromas? 12%

“The blend here is Semillon 80% and Sauvignon Blanc 20%, mirroring the mix in the vineyard. There are some slightly herby, musky elements here from the Sauvignon Blanc, but this is otherwise very different to the straight Sauvignon, showing more firm and crunchy fruit. The most apparent characteristic on the palate… is the delicious acid backbone, which gives the palate a vigorous lift.
