Description

Bin end. Last few cases shipped over from our Calais warehouse, as customer collections from there dried up in 2020, unsurprisingly. A dry white that's just beginning to show its age but still good with food.

'Inexpensive white Bordeaux that over-delivers handsomely for the price.' That’s how Master of Wine Richard Hemming described the 2014 on JancisRobinson.com. £10.95 a bottle.

Back label: ’Les Trois Hectares is a single, seven acre block of old Sémillon vines which were planted in 1947, along with some Sauvignon Blanc (about 20%) in the same field. Dry, aromatic and great with food - or simply on its own.’ 12% alc.

The grapes for Trois Hectares blanc come from a three hectare block (seven acres or so) of old vines. The wine is a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, although this is a rough figure because it’s what we euphemistically call a ’field blend’: when the vines were planted in 1947, there wasn’t quite the precision about what went into the ground as there is nowadays. Most vines are Sémillon but about a fifth are Sauvignon Blanc (and a handful of unidentifiable, random old things, truth be told). The wine comes from this parcel uniquely, and a small percentage is fermented in oak barrels with the majority in stainless steel. The result is a dry, gently fruity and aromatic white wine.

2014 vintage:

“Broad, just as Sémillon should be – textural and waxy – not very grassy, but there are a few bits of herb in there. Then quite a dense, viscous finish. This shares a lot of the qualities of young Hunter Valley Smillon – I wonder if it would develop those same toasty aromas? 12%

Drink 2015-2020 16.5/20”

Earlier vintages:

“An absolute steal. Oz Clarke is a fan and it’s served in Rick Stein’s restaurant too. This is one of the best white wines I’ve had this year.”

Richard Saxton, Stylist magazine

“The blend here is Semillon 80% and Sauvignon Blanc 20%, mirroring the mix in the vineyard. There are some slightly herby, musky elements here from the Sauvignon Blanc, but this is otherwise very different to the straight Sauvignon, showing more firm and crunchy fruit. The most apparent characteristic on the palate… is the delicious acid backbone, which gives the palate a vigorous lift. There are notes of white peach, and underneath some early suggestions of more honeyed, toasty elements. Lovely substance here. Great wine. 16.5/20”
