A rich and sumptuous red from one of the most imposing châteaux on Bordeaux's right bank, overlooking the Dordogne river. 2015 was a terrific vintage here and this is a blend of 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. Xavier Buffo, the MD, was once a vineyard consultant for us in the early days of our time at Bauduc and it's no surprise he's making such good wines from an undervalued appellation. 40% of this wine was aged in new French oak barrels, 60% in one-year old oak.
It's excellent value as well. If you were to visit the estate, and take a tour of the impressive, vast underground cellars, you'd be paying as much for this wine at the cellar door. Drink this 2015 - a ripe and lush wine but with plenty of structure - now or over the next 3-7 years. Decant if possible - though not essential - so that the oaky tannins soften with some air. 14.5% vol.

The 16th-century fortress of La Rivière is one of the showpieces of Fronsac. In this vintage, this wine has power and dense tannins as well as concentrated black fruits. With structure and bold, ripe fruits, the wine needs to age. Drink from 2022.

The 2015 Château de la Rivière has a placid and harmonious bouquet with gentle blackcurrant and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin and plenty of vivacious red berry fruit. Great energy here, fine delineation in the finish - this is one of the best wines from this Fronsac estate that I have tasted.

Dark purple core. Modern and ambitious nose blending new oak, roasted coffee, ripe dark fruit like cassis, plum and cherry with tobacco and fine spices. The palate is dense and chewy with ripe tannin, layers of spicy dark fruit, fine oak, and a long and dense finish. Well-balanced with nice drinkability in a modern roasted style.

One of my absolute favourites so far among the Fronsacs. Lovely nose with tobacco like aspects. Smooth and contoured. There is a pleasing straightforward aspect to this wine that beckons further sipping. (92 pts) - Coup de Cœur
